Salmon periode in river Skjern and Storå

River Skjern and Storå is home to a unique and ancient salmon population, known for their impressive size and excellent condition. They an be fished on from 16. April to 15. of October.

The unique salmon fishing in Denmark
The salmon-bearing rivers in Denmark can do something very special – we can fish for salmon for at least 6 months, when it is allowed in Skjern Å and Storå (in other rivers the period is longer). The unique thing is that the salmon that enter the Danish rivers already start in February and end with spawning in December. This gives us a long season with very different fishing. Salmon that enter the Danish rivers are in principle NOT EATING. Their stomachs tighten when they enter and they live off their fat stores until they are due to spawn in December.

Early fishing in April and May
The biggest, fattest and shiniest salmon are the ones we fish for in April and May. They have to be in great shape to survive until December. That is why they are unique, but they are also few. These are the ones we all want to try to catch and few people are lucky enough to catch.

June fishing can also be fantastic in some years, but is more dependent on water levels and heat. With July it is the same and if we have too much heat the water temperature rises to over 18 degrees and the fishing is closed. There can thus be a whole month +- where we cannot fish for salmon, but it can also be a cold summer where we can.

In August something happens. There is a constant influx of fresh larger salmon and those in the stream begin to take on color. But what can add a whole new dimension to the fishing is the rise of 1 year old salmon. They are called grilse and are around 60-75 cm. They are really nice salmon and there can be a lot of them.

September and October are the months when there are the most salmon in the streams and it is the peak season. There are both “grilse” brand new large shiny salmon and many colored salmon.

Storå
It is estimated that approximately 6,000-8,000 salmon enter the river each year, and it is the same large genetic spieces as in Skjern river. The salmon is concentrated in the lower part of the river thus the dencity and catch rate is high.

The distance between Storå and Skjern river is only 40 km and we are therefor fishing both rivers depending on the conditions on the day.

Skjern river
Skjern River is today one of Denmark’s best salmon rivers with the largest salmon population. It is estimated that approximately 7,000-9,000 salmon enter the river each year, although it is believed that the river can support up to 30,000. There is thus plenty of opportunity to build an outstanding population.
