Skjern river is Denmark’s most water-carrying

Skjern Å is the fly fisherman’s favorite river. It runs with the highest flow of between 15m3 in summer and 30m3 in spring and autumn.

Restoration of Skjern Å
In 1999, the largest and most expensive nature restoration project in Danish history began, and by the end of 2003, approximately half of the old natural area had been restored. The lower part of Skjern Å now offers a meandering river and wet meadows, creating a unique natural area of international importance.

The rebirth of the Skjern Å salmon
The rebirth of the Skjern Å salmon is a fantastic story and effort by enthusiasts. The stock was once thought to be extinct. The stock that has produced a record salmon of 26.5 kg was caught by tobacco dealer Dinesen from Copenhagen. Fortunately, biologists recovered quite a few specimens in Kartofte Å, which is a tributary to Skjern Å. They found small fish that did not look like the usual trout, and further studies confirmed that they were genuine wild salmon of the original West Jutland strain that is 10,000 years old. So it is a very strong and perfectly adapted strain to the Skjern River.

Thanks to the efforts of many volunteers and donated funds, an ambitious plan was launched to revive this unique salmon population, and it has been a success.

“It has succeeded – the salmon are back in large numbers!
